Bivacco Aldo Frattini: Alpine Art Refuge Opens in Bergamo Mountains
The Bivacco Aldo Frattini, a new cultural outpost and architectural experiment, has been inaugurated at 2,300 meters in Val Seriana along the Alta Via delle Orobie. It is the first stable emergency textile architecture in an alpine environment, weighing just 2,500 kg with a 2.5-square-meter footprint. Designed by EX., a research lab at the intersection of art, landscape, and sustainable technology, the structure resembles a technological, reversible alpine tent with a high-performance textile skin by Ferrino, fully demountable. Inside, natural cork lining provides insulation, and perimeter benches convert into beds or emergency stretchers, accommodating up to nine people. The project results from a collaboration between GAMeC – Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo and the Bergamo section of the Club Alpino Italiano, as part of Pensare come una montagna – Il Biennale delle Orobie, directed by Lorenzo Giusti. The bivouac also functions as a scientific observatory, equipped with sensors that transmit real-time environmental data to GAMeC's urban headquarters, creating a continuous information flow between mountain and city. The concept draws inspiration from Lloyd Kahn and Bob Easton's 1973 book Shelter and the theories of Stewart Brand and Frank Duffy, viewing architecture as an evolving, adaptable organism.
