Birdhouses Reimagined as Contemporary Design Objects in European Exhibition
Dutch designer Bertjan Pot created a series of colorful rope birdhouses inspired by his grandmother's farm kettle, where small birds would nest through the spout. His yellow-and-black version designed for coal tits appears in "Home Sweet Home" at MAD Brussels museum, running through Saturday. The exhibition features 83 birdhouses from international designers, ranging from practical to fantastical creations. Swiss interior stylist Connie Hüsser curated the show after discovering a lack of well-designed birdhouses and inviting her network of designer collaborators to create them. Hüsser found inspiration in Zurich's thriving nature during the early COVID-19 pandemic. This exhibition represents a broader trend where birdhouses are evolving from traditional garden elements into vehicles for contemporary design and artistic expression, with similar shows appearing across Europe and the United States. Recent studies showing declining bird populations add urgency to these creative shelters that offer both aesthetic value and functional habitat.
