BioMedia Exhibition Explores Life-Like Media at ZKM and Centre des arts

The exhibition "BioMedia: l'ère des médias semblables à la vie" is on view at the Centre des arts d'Enghien-les-Bains until July 8, 2022, and at the ZKM in Karlsruhe until August 28, 2022. Curated by ZKM director Peter Weibel with Sarah Donderer and Daria Mille, the show features works by about fifteen artists that examine the organic behaviors of technological components. Highlights include Samuel Bianchini's "Snakable" (2020), where a video cable contorts like a snake; Christian Mio Loclair's "Narciss" (2018), an AI-driven screen facing a mirror; Anna Dumitriu & Alex May's "Cyberspecies Proximity" (2019), a robot that evokes empathy; Fabien Zocco's "Spider and I" (2020), a robotic spider responding to the artist's emotional state via a connected bracelet; Justine Emard's "Supraorganism" (2021), a sound-light installation using bee data; and Jake Elwes' "CUSP" (2019), an AI-generated bird video projected in an Essex marsh. The exhibition explores the blurring of life and media, referencing Nam June Paik's "TV Buddha" (1972) and Allan Kaprow's 1993 book "Art and Life Confused."
