Bilotti threatens to withdraw Boccioni bronze over GNAMC didactic errors

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Roberto Bilotti Ruggi d’Aragona has threatened to withdraw his bronze cast of Umberto Boccioni's "Forme Uniche della continuità nello spazio" from the exhibition "Il tempo del Futurismo 1909–1924" at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAMC) in Rome, citing a misleading label. The sculpture, part of the Bilotti Edition authorized by Marinetti's heirs, was produced in 2011 via surmoulage from a 1949 bronze owned by Hilti Art in Liechtenstein. Bilotti claims the label uses "riproduzione" instead of the correct "fusione da bronzo finito," omits the 1913 date, and places Boccioni's name last. He also criticizes the marble base, contrary to Boccioni's anti-marble stance. The exhibition's scientific committee initially sought a bronze from Milan's Museo del Novecento, deemed too damaged, then a La Medusa edition rejected for legal issues, and a Guggenheim Venice cast lacking provenance. Bilotti's bronze, declared of "particular interest" by Italy's Ministry of Culture in 2013, was recently on a world tour organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also notes the absence of Boccioni's plaster "L'Antigrazioso" (1912), owned by GNAMC since 1952. The label was reportedly detached hours after the opening.
