Bill Viola's 'Icons of Light' Opens at Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Palazzo Bonaparte, the exhibition space of Generali Valore Cultura, has reopened after two years of forced closure with a major retrospective dedicated to American video art pioneer Bill Viola (New York, 1951). Titled 'BILL VIOLA. Icons of Light', the exhibition runs until June 26, 2022, and traces 40 years of the artist's research through 15 of his most renowned works. Curated by Kira Perov, Viola's wife and executive director of the Bill Viola Studio, the show begins with 'The Reflecting Pool' (1977-79) and concludes with the 'Martyrs' series (2014), alongside hypnotic masterpieces such as 'Ascension' (2000) and works from the celebrated 'Water Portraits' series (2013). The immersive journey explores themes of nature, humanity, existence, meditation, and spirituality, drawing from Christian and Buddhist traditions. The exhibition follows a major presentation at Palazzo Reale in Palermo, confirming Viola's connection to Italy.
