Bill Viola and Michelangelo in Dialogue at Royal Academy of Arts London
In January 2019, the Royal Academy of Arts in London will open an exhibition pairing video artist Bill Viola (New York, 1951) with Renaissance master Michelangelo Buonarroti (Caprese, 1475 – Rome, 1564). Despite five centuries and different media, both artists share a deep focus on nature and human experience. The show, titled 'Bill Viola / Michelangelo – Life Death Rebirth,' runs from 26 January to 31 March 2019. Twelve video installations by Viola (1977–2013) will meet fifteen works by Michelangelo, including fourteen drawings and the Tondo Taddei, a marble bas-relief from the Royal Academy's collection—the only Michelangelo marble sculpture in UK collections. The exhibition explores spiritual and emotional themes of life, death, and rebirth.
