Bike to the Future Exhibition at Design Museum Gent Explores Cycling Evolution
The Design Museum Gent presents "Bike to the Future," a coproduction with Rome's IMF Foundation, running until October 23, 2016. Curated by Elisabetta Pisu, Evelien Bracke, and Thomas Wittouck, the exhibition challenges stereotypes about bicycles by showcasing prototypes from designers Philippe Starck, Ross Lovegrove, and Richard Sapper. These designs integrate new materials like bamboo, carbon fiber, and laminated wood to improve ergonomics and portability. The show also covers accessories, including a bicycle airbag, anti-theft devices, and smartphone apps. Infrastructure projects are highlighted, such as the VenTo cycle path by Politecnico di Milano linking Venice to Turin, proposals by Foster+Partners for London, and an elevated track in Copenhagen by Dissing+Weitling.
