Bigaignon and Rhinoceros present 'Within Space' in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The third and final act of the collaboration between Parisian gallery Bigaignon and Rhinoceros in Rome, curated by Thierry Bigaignon, explores the concept of space through photography. Titled 'Within Space', the exhibition challenges the two-dimensional medium to represent the third dimension. Ten artists from different generations and backgrounds interpret space as a primary condition of every image and as sensitive, mental matter. The show is held at the contemporary art space founded by Alessia Caruso Fendi and designed by Jean Nouvel. Artists include Vittoria Gerardi (Padua, 1996), whose photographs of Pompeii evoke buried space; Mary-Ellen Bartley (New York, 1959), who pays homage to Giorgio Morandi; Yannig Hedel (Brittany, 1948) and Jean de Pomereu (Paris, 1969), who turn space into abstract images; Marco Tagliafico (Alessandria, 1985), who blurs reality and fiction; Elyn Zimmerman (Philadelphia, 1945), focusing on light; Denis Malarte (Caen, 1952 – Paris, 1970), who transformed a domestic space; Thierry Urbain (France, 1960), with dreamlike architectures; Renato D'Agostin (Venice, 1983), reinterpreting Venice; Bernard Joubert (Paris, 1946), with geometric works; and François Kenesi (France, 1967), with meta-photography. The exhibition culminates with Olivier Ratsi's (France, 1972) immersive installation 'Frame Destruct', which condenses light, space, and time, referencing chronophotography. The show runs at Rhinoceros in Rome.
