Biennale Warszawa Debuts in Poland with 400+ Participants

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The first edition of Biennale Warszawa, titled 'Let’s organise our future!', is underway in Warsaw until June 30, 2019. This interdisciplinary and sociopolitical event features 56 events and over 100 presentations across 16 venues, aiming to reflect on the current world and find creative alternatives. Director Paweł Wodziński, a director, essayist, curator, and founder of Towarzystwo Teatralne, explains that the biennial model stems from Poland's lack of similar large-scale events and a desire to challenge politically neutral cultural categories. The program includes over 400 co-creators—researchers, intellectuals, theater makers, visual artists, composers, musicians, curators, activist community representatives, and Warsaw residents including children and foreigners—invited to develop content. Events span theater performances, concerts, exhibitions, conferences, workshops, guided tours, film screenings, congresses, and debates. Venues include the Biennale Warszawa headquarters at Marszałkowska 35/40, partner institutions such as Nowy Teatr, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Teatr Powszechny, TR Warszawa, U-jazdowski Center for Contemporary Art, POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, and Museum of Praga, as well as lesser-known sites like an empty school building and a market. Deputy director Bartek Frąckowiak states that the biennial aims to broaden vision and include diverse people and groups in designing the future and building multilateral partnerships.
