Biennale Teatro 2019 explores dramaturgy as nourishment in Venice

The 2019 Biennale Teatro in Venice, directed by Antonio Latella, investigates the nature and possibilities of dramaturgy through a diverse program. Italian premieres include Quotidiana.com's "Il racconto delle cose mai accadute" by Roberto Scappin and Paola Vannoni, a performance blending cinematic language with absurd dialogue between marginalized characters Nikita and Cyrano. Alessandro Serra's "Il giardino dei ciliegi" transforms Chekhov's text into a poetic theater of light, space, and movement, evoking childhood nostalgia. Jens Hillje, awarded the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement, presents Sibylle Berg's "Es sagt mir nichts das sogenannte Draussen" directed by Sebastian Nübling, a critique of female condition in contemporary society performed by Suna Gürler, Rahel Jankowski, and Cynthia Micas. Julian Hetzel's "All inclusive" explores the aestheticization of violence through a multi-layered performance involving refugees as spectators and a gift shop finale, questioning complicity in the economy of pain. His second piece, "I'm not here says the void," examines absence and collective imagination with performer Claudio Rietfeld.
