Biennale President Buttafuoco Clashes with EU Over Funding Cuts

During a press conference for the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, Biennale President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco criticized the European Commission for cutting €2 million in funding to the Biennale Cinema section, allegedly due to Russia's involvement in the Biennale Arte. Buttafuoco stated that the Biennale cannot submit to dictates, emphasizing its 131-year history of autonomy and freedom of expression. He claimed the Commission sent three letters with repeated questions despite detailed responses. Buttafuoco cited an Huffington Post headline: "The EU takes 2 million from the Biennale and gives 6 billion in six months to Putin," highlighting ongoing trade between European countries and Russia. He assured that film activities will continue due to the institution's solidity. The Biennale will appeal the decision. Biennale Cinema director Alberto Barbera expressed bewilderment, noting the cut affects a department unrelated to the Biennale Arte controversy and lacks legal justification.
