Biennale Musica 2023: Electronic Music Marks a Turning Point

The 2023 Venice Biennale Musica, curated by Lucia Ronchetti, was hailed as a turning point for its focus on electronic music, blending experimentalism with accessibility. The festival featured performances by Brian Eno (Golden Lion) and Miller Puckette (Silver Lion). The Club Micro Music section included a 'Notte di Nero' on October 27 with DJs Loraine James and Kode9, and a 'Notte di Battiti' on October 28 with Jjjjjerome Ellis, Lamin Fofana, and Jace Clayton's 'Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner'. The final concert on October 29 featured Nicolas Becker and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. The Stylus Phantasticus series showcased Venetian organs, while the Ensemble C Barré and Neue Vocalsolisten performed Francesca Verunelli's 'Songs&Voices'. Light design by Theresa Baumgartner enhanced the atmosphere. Pietrangelo Buttafuoco was recently appointed president of the Biennale.
