Biennale Interieur 2016: Silver Linings in Kortrijk

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The 25th edition of Biennale Interieur, titled 'Silver Linings – Interior', opens in Kortrijk, Belgium, curated by Kirsten Geers and David Van Severen. The theme marks a return to the origins of interior design, focusing on complete spaces rather than individual objects, a shift from the object-centric trends of the past two decades. The curators emphasize a broad interpretation of 'interior', encompassing high-tech spaces, domestic environments, and artistic installations, offering visitors 'a catalog of a hypothetical world'. Six international guests create unique spaces: Geers and Van Severen present a preview of Solo House, a transparent residence designed for a Spanish project, with furniture and lamps by Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen. Moritz Küng reinterprets his 'Schöner Wohnen' project from ten years ago, featuring artworks as furniture in a fictional interior. Other participants include Californian architects Johnston MarkLee with designer Jonathan Olivares, Franco-Swiss architect Philippe Rahm, and Swiss duo Trix and Robert Haussmann. The off-program includes exhibitions 'Wild Things' by Lidewij Edelkoot and Philip Fimmano, and 'W/O We are the next generation' by Designregio Kortrijk, both at museum Texture, plus an installation 'Sequence n° 1' by photographer Filip Dujardin celebrating Belgian architectural archetypes. The biennale runs from October 14 to 23, 2016 at Xpo Kortrijk.
