Biennale di Venezia's revamped website merges archives and artist videos

digital · 2026-05-05

The 57th Venice Biennale's website, Viva Arte Viva, has been redesigned as a portal combining the ASAC (Archivio Storico delle Arti Contemporanee) and the Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia. It incrementally expands historical and current information. The site features the original 1895 manifesto listing artists and nations—Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, England, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, and Sweden-Norway—alongside the 2017 edition curated by Christine Macel, which includes 120 artists from 51 countries. A new initiative, Pratiche d’Artista, offers short videos made by artists themselves, providing studio insights. One example is Philippe Parreno's 4'43" video following a cuttlefish in a liquid environment, exploring reality and representation. The National Pavilions section links to participating countries, though only a few provide in-depth content; Austria, Great Britain (both present since 1895), and the United Arab Emirates (since 2009) offer timelines with images. The site aims to facilitate visitor access to art spaces.
