Biennale di Venezia revives its magazine after 53 years, appoints controversial director Luigi Mascheroni
After 53 years, La Biennale di Venezia has revived its official magazine, first published in 1950. The quarterly print edition, now edited by Debora Rossi (head of the Biennale's Historical Archive), will feature monographic issues covering art, architecture, dance, music, theater, cinema, science, literature, and fashion. The first issue, titled "Diluvi prossimi venturi / The Coming Floods," includes contributions from Manal AlDowayan, Orhan Pamuk, Carolyn Carlson, and others, with a cover photo by Yuri Ancarani and graphic design by Tomo Tomo. However, the appointment of journalist Luigi Mascheroni as director has sparked controversy due to his history of sexist, homophobic, and transphobic remarks on social media and in his columns for Il Giornale. Critics question the suitability of such a figure for an institution of the Biennale's stature, especially given President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco's previous efforts to shield the institution from political pressures. The magazine is available at the Biennale's online store and major bookstores.
