Biennale di Venezia acquires Luciano e Maud Giaccari archive

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Historical Archive of the Venice Biennale has obtained the Luciano and Maud Giaccari Fund, which encompasses over four decades of audiovisual experimentation and research. Maud Giaccari (Varese, 1938–2025), a journalist and artist since the late 1960s, passed away on July 25, 2025, at the age of 87. Alongside her husband, Luciano Giaccari (1934–2015), a notary and innovator in video art, she co-founded Studio 970 2 in Varese, Italy, a groundbreaking video production facility that captured performances by notable figures such as Joan Jonas and Robert Wilson. In 1974, they established RTL, one of Italy's earliest free television channels, and from 1977 to the early 1980s, Maud directed news at ETL, another free TV station. In 2024, she began digitizing the fund with the Biennale's archive, completing it shortly before her passing. This acquisition enhances the Biennale's archival collection, which includes the Luca Ronconi Archive and the Palazzo Grassi/Fiat Fund.
