Biennale di Venezia 2020: Golden Lions for Theatre and Dance Announced

Despite the pandemic, La Biennale di Venezia has announced the Golden and Silver Lions for its 2020 Theatre and Dance festivals, which will proceed in autumn after the postponement of the Architecture Exhibition to 2021. New president Roberto Cicutto emphasizes a renewed focus on live arts and interdisciplinary dialogue. For Theatre, director Antonio Latella awards the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to sound composer Franco Visioli, who will also debut his first direction in Venice. The Silver Lion goes to Alessio Maria Romano, recognized for his pedagogical work training actor-performers. For Dance, Marie Chouinard's final edition as director awards the Golden Lion to transdisciplinary artist La Ribot, praised for her radical, hybrid work. The Silver Lion goes to Claudia Castellucci, who will present the premiere of "Fisica dell'aspra comunione" based on Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue des Oiseaux.
