Biennale dell'Umorismo di Tolentino 2017 Winners Announced
The 29th edition of the Biennale dell'Umorismo nell'arte in Tolentino, Italy, has announced its winners. The competition, founded in 1961 by physician and caricaturist Luigi Mari, drew 608 works from 226 artists across over 40 countries, including the United States, Cuba, India, China, and Sudan. The Premio Città di Tolentino, themed 'Honesty,' was awarded to Ukrainian artist Konstantin Kazanchev for a drawing addressing honesty in sports, praised by the jury for its 'pregnancy of the theme' and 'declination of honesty in terms of self-awareness.' The jury was led by Rudy Gheysens, president of the European Cartoon Center, and included Francesco Scoppola, Marco d'Agostino, Marilena Nardi, Mauro Evangelista, Mauro Cicarè, Marco Marilungo, Isabella Tonnarelli, Luca Giustozzi, and Giorgio Leggi. The Premio Luigi Mari, dedicated to caricatures of famous figures, was won by Spanish artist Asier Sanz for his grotesque portrayal of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, lauded for its 'immediacy and effectiveness' and 'non-physiognomic recognizability.' Winning and participating works are on display at the MIUMOR – Museo Internazionale dell'Umorismo nell'arte until January 28, 2018, where visitors can vote for the Premio del Pubblico. The museum, founded in 1970, is located in Tolentino, in the province of Macerata.
