Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement 2024 explores deepfakes and AI through video art

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

The 2024 Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement in Geneva, curated by Andrea Bellini and Nora N. Khan, features 15 artists exploring the boundary between visible and invisible. The exhibition draws a parallel between black holes as cosmic cameras and the current state of image civilization, which may collapse into deepfakes. Works include American Artist's 'Yannis Window' inspired by Octavia Butler, Interspecific's 'Codex Virtualis' visualizing microbial morphogenesis, Lawrence Lek's 'Empty Rider' staging an AI trial from a drone's perspective, and Emmanuel Van Der Auwera's 'Videosculpture XXX (The Gospel)' using generative video and neural radiance fields. Italian artists Formafantasma and Diego Marcon take a more concrete approach: Formafantasma's 'Ore Stream' investigates e-waste disposal, while Marcon's 'La gola' presents a love letter exchange between Gianni and Rossana. Sheila Chiamaka Chukwulozie's '11:11' incorporates tarot symbolism, and Lauren Lee McCarthy's 'Saliva Retreat' documents a collective performance creating a saliva bank. The biennial runs at the Centre d'Art Contemporain (CAC) Geneva.
