Biennale Danza 2026 Closes with 17,000 Attendees; McGregor Reappointed
The 20th International Festival of Contemporary Dance at the Venice Biennale wraps up on Saturday, August 1, attracting 17,000 visitors and filling 90% of its venues. Sir Wayne McGregor has been appointed as the Artistic Director for the 2027-2028 period. The closing events showcase the Italian premiere of 'What is War' by Wen Hui and Eiko Otake, alongside the world premiere of 'Scirocco (Death in Venice; Bridge of Sighs)' by John Neumeier and others, performed by WINNDance. Buttafuoco commended McGregor's innovative approach to choreographic expression. Since taking charge of the Dance section in 2021, McGregor has earned various accolades, including a CBE in 2011 and a knighthood in 2024. The festival receives backing from the Ministry of Culture and the Veneto Region.
