Biennale Architettura 2021 Preview: How Will We Live Together?

The 17th International Architecture Exhibition, titled 'How Will We Live Together?' and curated by Hashim Sarkis, opened at the Corderie dell'Arsenale in Venice. The exhibition prioritizes themes of alter-normality and sharing over spectacular displays, with a focus on migration, refugee issues, and the 'living apart together' reality of the pandemic. Projects include geological and stratigraphic studies of the Acropolis of Athens by David Gissen, Jennifer Stagen, and Mantha Zarmakoupi; reflections on human-AI interaction via Ani Liu's 'toys'; and social analysis of toilets across geographies by Matilde Cassani, Ignacio G. Galán, and Ivan L. Munuera. The exhibition features little traditional architecture, instead exploring hybrid, interdisciplinary approaches. Notable works include Lina Ghotmeh's Stone Garden tower in Beirut, referencing the port explosion, and Benedetta Tagliabue's market project in a Paris suburb inspired by Georges Perec. Criticized projects include the celebratory 'La vita oltre la Terra' and the 'Hospital of the Future' with field stretchers for viewing. The exhibition continues at the Central Pavilion in the Giardini.
