Biennale Architettura 2018: tour among national pavilions across Venice

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

The 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, features 71 participants in the International Exhibition and 63 national participations, 11 of which are located outside the Arsenale and Giardini venues. Notable off-site pavilions include the Holy See's debut with a "diffuse pavilion" Vatican Chapel on San Giorgio Maggiore Island, and Portugal's collective intervention at Palazzo Giustinian Lolin in San Marco. Pakistan participates for the first time at Giardino delle Marinaressa, curated by Sami Chohan, focusing on public space in Karachi. Lithuania's first independent participation, "The Swamp Pavilion" curated by Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas at Il Giardino Bianco Art Space, serves as a neutral discussion hub. Estonia's "Weak Monument" at Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, curated by Laura Linci, Roland Reemaa, and Tadeas Riha, questions monumentality. Montenegro's "Wo/Man Under Umbrella" at Palazzo Malipiero, curated by Sonja Radovic Jelovac, applies local resilience. Guatemala's "Stigma" at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, curated by Daniele Radini Tedeschi and Stefania Pieralice, presents utopian projects. Romania's "Mnemonics" at the Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research, curated by Romeo Cuc, explores collective childhood memory and space reappropriation.
