Beyond Narcissus exhibition explores non-mimetic mirrors through French and American artists

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From November 20, 2005, to January 30, 2006, Dorsky Gallery in Long Island City, New York, hosted Beyond Narcissus, curated by Soko Phay-Vakalis. This exhibition showcased mirrors that extend beyond mere self-reflection, featuring works from French artists Philippe Ramette, Pascal Pinaud, and Philippe Segond, alongside New York artists John L. Moore, Dennis Adams, and Alfredo Jaar. Phay-Vakalis categorized the pieces into four themes: contemporary vanities, displacements, empty mirrors, and abyssal mirrors. Notably, Dennis Adams's Vanity for Patty Hearst (1997) utilized dark glass for haunting reflections, while Alfredo Jaar's Mirror (2004) reimagined self-images as portraits of mine workers. The exhibition also included performances by Spanish artist Ferran Martin and a dedicated website, with plans for future shows as part of an ongoing project.
