Beyond Alien: H.R. Giger Retrospective in Turin

A major retrospective of H.R. Giger (1940–2014), titled 'Beyond Alien: H.R. Giger', is on view at the Mastio della Cittadella in Turin. Curated by Marco Witzig, the exhibition features over seventy works from the H.R. Giger Museum, including pencil sketches, airbrushed paintings, sculptures, and prints. While aiming to highlight Giger's broader artistic output beyond the 'Alien' franchise, the show has drawn criticism for its over-reliance on prints versus original works, a 3D-printed xenomorph at the entrance that feels like a selfie gimmick, and a plastic chain curtain. The labyrinthine layout covers Giger's career across cinema (including his unrealized 'Dune' for Alejandro Jodorowsky), architecture, and music (microphone stand for Korn's Jonathan Davis, album art for Debbie Harry's 'KooKoo'). The exhibition extends to the Museo del Cinema di Torino with lectures on October 17, 25, and December 5.
