Beverly Pepper retrospective at Cubo Unipol in Bologna

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The exhibition 'Beverly Pepper. Space Outside' at Cubo Unipol in Bologna highlights two sculptures from the Unipol Group's collection—'Primis I' (1967-68) and 'Virgo Rectangle Twist' (1967)—both in polished stainless steel, a material Pepper favored alongside Cor-Ten steel. The show also includes maquettes, sketchbooks, and large photographic prints from the Fondazione Progetti Beverly Pepper. Curated by Marco Tonelli and Ilaria Bignotti, the exhibition explores Pepper's Connective art concept, which modifies environmental perception and engages communities. Pepper was the only woman among 53 artists at the 1962 'Sculture nella città' exhibition in Spoleto, where she discovered metal sculpture. She often used the pseudonym George to gain respect in foundries and rejected gender categorization. After 1972, she lived in Todi, where a park with 20 of her sculptures opened in 2019. She died in Todi in 2020. The exhibition also features the small Cor-Ten piece 'Diagonal Kappa' (1971) at the Porta Europa venue.
