Betye Saar's Black Dolls Exhibition at New-York Historical for Her 100th Birthday
From May 8 to October 4, 2026, the New-York Historical Society will showcase Betye Saar's Black Dolls in honor of the artist's centennial. This exhibition builds upon the museum's 2022 presentation, Black Dolls, and highlights Saar's relationship with Black dolls. Renowned for her contributions to the 1970s Black Arts and feminist art movements, Saar creates assemblages that challenge racist American imagery. The display will include a variety of dolls from her promised donation of over 100 Black dolls to the museum's collection, along with watercolors and assemblages that feature dolls arranged in altar-like formations.
