Between Land and Sea Festival Launches in Palermo, Bridging Europe and Africa

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

The new festival Between Land and Sea, curated by Studio Rizoma, runs in Palermo from October 19 to 24, 2021, with subsequent editions in Bremen and Tunis. Conceived by European Alternatives, the festival uses art, theater, music, and dance to address migration, integration, and environmental issues. Developed with the Biennale of Tunis Dream City and Bremen State Theater, it involves over 50 artists, workers, researchers, migrants, and citizens from Palermo, Tunis, Bremen, Beirut, New York, Berlin, Dakar, and Bamako. The program includes talks and debates under the project Syndicat!, which explores transnational collaboration between port cities. Key events include an exhibition of Francesco Bellina's photographs at the Ecomuseo Mare Memoria Viva on waste scandals in Campania and Tunisia; A space to hold by Cheikh Sene and Lina Issa at Piazza Mediterraneo, reconstructing a migrant worker's hut destroyed by fire in Campobello di Mazara; and the sound installation Emerald City by Stefania Artusi, which replays the Muslim call to prayer (Adhan) twice daily outside the Tunisian Mosque. On October 23, the Teatro Biondo hosts Prometeo – The Blue Kangaroo, a radical rewriting of the Prometheus myth directed by Simone Mannino, written with Lorenzo Marsili and Eva Maria Bertschy, featuring a transnational ensemble.
