Bettina Blanc Penther's Video and Photographic Practice Explores Movement and Queer Narratives

artist · 2026-04-23

Bettina Blanc Penther, born in 1991, creates photographs, videos, and texts, with her films emphasizing bodily language and dialogue. Her 2017 video work "Too Much Tenderness," produced by Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains, runs 27 minutes and depicts two friends during a summer afternoon, accompanied by a wandering ghost. In 2019, "Too Much Tenderness" was presented at the Xposed Festival in Berlin, while her work "I am a believer" appeared at Queer Lisboa. She also performed in Mickaël Phelippeau's choreographic piece "Footballeuses" and collaborated on Marcela Santander Corvalàn's "Quietos" that same year. Blanc Penther graduated from ENSAD, Paris in 2016 and from Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing in 2018. Her earlier work "Fake Faune 1" filtered the figure of Nijinski through a homemade aesthetic, with photography artificially freezing movement, unlike her films which allow it free rein. She lives and works in Paris. In 2019, she was involved with the CCNO centre chorégraphique national d'Orléans. Her works were included in Panorama 20 at Le Fresnoy in 2018, curated by José-Manuel Gonçalvès, and in Panorama 19 in 2017, curated by Jean de Loisy.
