Bethan Laura Wood's modular chandelier for Baccarat debuts at Milan design week

architecture-design · 2026-04-30

British designer Bethan Laura Wood has created Mille Fleurs, a modular chandelier for historic French crystal house Baccarat, unveiled at Milan design week in April 2026. The piece reinterprets Baccarat's iconic Zénith chandelier, introduced around 1850, as a system of rings suspended on tensioned cables that can be arranged vertically or horizontally. Wood is the first designer to turn the Zénith into a modular system, removing the central core to create a "vortex" effect. The chandelier combines classic Zénith components with new elements, including a "pinch lozenge" and crystal glass flowers from Wood's Mexico-inspired Criss Cross collection (2013), as well as flower forms sourced from Baccarat's archives. The color palette features greens, lilac, and gold. The Mille Fleurs collection also includes wall sconces nicknamed "the frogs." The chandelier was the centerpiece of Baccarat's Crystal Crypt exhibition, designed by artist and curator Emmanuelle Luciani with a sci-fi theme combining cathedral architecture, neon lights, dancers, and a techno soundscape. The exhibition ran from 21 to 25 April 2026 during Milan design week. Photography by Philippe Garcia.
