Bethan Huws at Centre international d'art et du paysage, Vassivière

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Bethan Huws's exhibition at the Centre international d'art et du paysage on the island of Vassivière-en-Limousin ran from March 12 to June 19, 2011. The Welsh artist's practice involves detaching objects and language from their original contexts to create new resonances. Drawing on Marcel Duchamp's readymades, Huws combines everyday items and linguistic elements, maintaining their banality while transforming them into points of density and unexpected light. Works include pairs of black and white animals, a gas lamp flame held by a raised arm, accumulations of bottle racks, and three bronze parrot coat racks integrated into the forest. The exhibition challenges established practices and meanings, provoking a wavering between thought and emotion, wakefulness and dream. The text was written by Didier Arnaudet.
