Bert Theis Retrospective at Mudam Luxembourg Explores Utopia and Urban Activism
Mudam Luxembourg is hosting 'Building Philosophy – Cultivating Utopia', the first retrospective dedicated to Bert Theis (1952–2016), curated by Enrico Lunghi and Christophe Gallois. Rather than following a timeline, the exhibit showcases Theis's evolution from surrealist collages in the 1980s through his painting work in the 1990s and his architectural projects for biennials. A key feature is the Isola Art Center in Milan (2003–2007), where Theis and locals fought against gentrification during the Porta Nuova–Varesine redevelopment. The show includes documents, videos, and performance accounts. Mariette Schiltz, Theis's partner, notes its influence on Isola Pepe Verde and Rimaflow. A catalogue contains contributions from Elvira Vannini and Marco Scotini. The exhibit runs until August 25, 2019.
