Bernard Arnault Denies Family Succession Feud, Defends Tax Breaks for Arts Patronage

Bernard Arnault, France's richest man and a major art patron, has publicly refuted a Le Monde investigation that accused him of using arts philanthropy for tax advantages and alleged family succession disputes. The six-part series, titled "the last royal family of France," includes a chapter on Arnault's engagement with the arts, claiming his founding of the Fondation Louis Vuitton (FLV) and financing of art acquisitions for French museums were driven by a desire to showcase power, seize marketing opportunities, and declare tax deductions. Le Monde reported that French law allows businesses to cut 60% of taxes on certain arts support, and a separate law grants a 90% tax cut on donations for state acquisitions of "national treasures." By their calculation, LVMH's €43 million ($49 million) spent on Gustave Caillebotte's Boating Party for the Musée d'Orsay cost only €4.3 million ($4.9 million) after deductions. In exchange for LVMH's funding, French institutions offered LVMH brands rental of palaces and museums for fashion shows at advantageous rates. Arnault responded on X, defending his actions as lawful and denying family strife, stating those betting on a rift "will be waiting a long time."
