Berna Reale's Forensic Art Confronts Brazil's Prison Crisis and Social Violence

Berna Reale, an artist and forensic expert from Belém, Pará, integrates her dual professions to create work addressing Brazil's severe social problems, particularly the prison system. Born in 1956 and a graduate of the Federal University of Pará, she has worked for eight years at the Renato Chaves Center for Scientific Expertise. Her art, including performances, photographs, and installations, is now intensely focused on social issues, a shift she attributes to her forensic work, which exposed her to human misery beyond poverty. Reale argues the root of prison violence lies outside prison walls, in systemic failures of education, food, and basic healthcare. A pivotal moment was her 2026 performance 'Americano' at the Santa Izabel penitentiary complex, where she walked dark corridors with a torch, an experience that left her with profound sadness. She is currently developing three projects: a street performance on incarceration, photographic works on human misery, and a new performance venture she describes as a challenging 'delirium.' Reale, who has participated in the Venice Biennale, states her art aims to make the public reflect, often shockingly, on a distant reality.
