Berlin's Techno Culture Recognized as UNESCO Intangible Heritage

On March 13, 2024, UNESCO officially inscribed Berlin's techno culture on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The application was submitted in 2022 by Rave the Planet, the non-profit organization that organizes the successor to the legendary Love Parade. The recognition highlights techno's role in fostering social cohesion, reclaiming industrial urban spaces, and promoting values such as diversity, respect, and cosmopolitanism. German Culture Minister Claudia Roth stated that the designation will support further promotion and protection through workshops, panels, cultural events, exhibitions, and techno parades. The Clubcommission, a network of clubs including the historic Berghain, called the announcement a turning point for producers, artists, club operators, and event organizers. They expressed gratitude to bands like Kraftwerk, African American DJs, and producers such as Detroit's Underground Resistance for their decisive contributions. Berlin's techno scene joins over 150 other German cultural expressions protected by UNESCO, including traditional singing from Finsterwalde and mountaineering in Saxony. The next Rave the Planet event is scheduled for August 17, 2024, in Berlin, now with enhanced protections.
