Berlin's Kulturwerk: A Model Production Space for Artists

The Berufsverband Berliner Künstler (bbk) manages Berlin's Kulturwerk, which provides affordable workshops in ceramics, metal, wood, and stone for approximately €100 weekly. Situated in a 3,600 m² industrial space on Osloer Strasse, this facility offers technical support and machinery but does not engage in producing multiples or selling artworks. Unlike traditional ceramic producers such as Sèvres or Meissen, Kulturwerk emphasizes artistic exploration rather than technical precision. Its ceramics workshop boasts three kilns, one measuring 140 x 120 x 75 cm, surpassing the equipment available at Berlin's two art schools, UdK and Weissensee. Notable artists like Jessica Jackson Hutchins, John Isaacs, and others have utilized the space. Additionally, the bbk runs screen printing, lithography, and etching workshops at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Kreuzberg and has recently acquired a 3D scanner and digital photography tools. Susanne Jung supports artists in embracing creative risks. This model has drawn international talent for over 27 years, enhancing Berlin's status as a production center despite increasing living expenses.
