Berlin's Finance Senator Stefan Evers Takes Over Culture Administration

institutional · 2026-04-29

Berlin's Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU) will also lead the Senate's culture administration for the next five months until the September 20 state election. He replaces Sarah Wedl-Wilson (independent), who resigned on Friday after a state audit office report deemed funding for 13 antisemitism prevention projects totaling €2.6 million illegal. Wedl-Wilson had approved the grants. Initially, former Justice Senator Thomas Heilmann (CDU) was considered, but district CDU chairpersons agreed on Evers during a Tuesday evening meeting attended by Governing Mayor Kai Wegner. Wegner stated Evers is already negotiating the capital city financing agreement, which includes cultural funding, and thanked him for taking on the additional role. Evers will lead two senate departments until the election.
