Berlin-Rom Express: New Electronic Music Series at Villa Massimo
On September 7, 2018, the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo launches Berlin-Rom Express, a new electronic music series curated by Berghain manager André Jürgens and artist Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto). The debut features Chinese-born, Berlin-based artist Pan Daijing performing a live premiere for Rome, followed by DJ sets from Alva Noto and Rabih Beaini. This replaces the former Electric Campfire festival, which ended after ten years due to a strategic shift toward smaller, more exclusive events. Director Joachim Blüher states the new format is deliberately downsized and more exclusive. Electric Campfire has relocated to Saint Petersburg, where on September 8, artists from the Raster label will gather. Berlin-Rom Express will continue annually, inviting a resident artist for a seven-week fellowship at Villa Massimo to create a performance, accompanied by guest DJs.
