Berlin Modern Museum Opening Delayed to 2030 Amid Moisture Issues and Cost Overruns

The opening of Berlin Modern, a museum designed by Herzog & de Meuron to house 20th-century art collections from the Nationalgalerie, the Marx Collection, and the Pietzsch Collection, has been postponed to 2030. Located at the Kulturforum between the Philharmonie and the Neue Nationalgalerie, the project has faced repeated delays and cost escalations since its 2019 launch. Originally budgeted at €200 million in 2014, costs have risen to €526 million, with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation acknowledging €507 million—a record for a German museum. In spring 2026, moisture damage affected the structure, causing mold and algae due to high humidity, concrete sensitivity, and ventilation failures. Construction is now eight months behind schedule, pushing completion to 2029 and public opening to mid-2030. Critics have attacked the building's austere design and the project's management, while the foundation argues the museum is essential to make visible a significant portion of Berlin's modern art holdings.
