Berlin Modern Museum Delayed to 2030 Due to Moisture Damage

architecture-design · 2026-04-24

The completion of the Berlin Modern museum has been pushed back by about eight months to 2030 due to moisture damage in parts of the raw structure, according to a spokesperson for the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK). The foundation stated that all available measures for rapid damage repair have been taken and no construction stop was necessary. The museum, located near Potsdamer Platz, will serve as an extension of the Neue Nationalgalerie, which can only display a portion of its collection. Total costs are now estimated at €507 million, up from an initial €200 million. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the project broke ground in 2019 with an expected completion in 2026; last autumn's topping-out ceremony targeted 2029. The SPK plans to fill the building with art before its official opening.
