Berlin exhibition explores migrant remittances as emotional architecture
In Berlin, SAVVY Contemporary hosted a group exhibition titled 'Close to Home: Remittance Spaces Between Arrival and Return', focusing on the financial transfers made by migrants. Curated by Patrick Jimenez Krämer and Lukas Feireiss, the exhibition showcased 13 artists based in Berlin with migration backgrounds and ran until 19 October. Among the featured works was Krämer's 'Bahay Kubo' (2025), which examined the passing of skills through remittances. Yairan Montejo's mural 'The Long Way Home' (2025) illustrated the difficulties of sending money to Cuba. Akshita Garud and Avantika Khanna's piece 'Cross My Palm With Silver' (2025) questioned the implications of remittances. Additionally, Hasan Gündoğan and Deniz Örün presented 'Çavê ta paçtaka – Loss Kisses' (2025), which digitized family videos, while Lizza May David showcased her documentary 'Two Years More' (2006) and painting 'Sari-Sari' (2025) to highlight familial ties. Van Bo Le-Mentzel's 'Artist Wallidency' (2025) recreated his aunt's home. Most of these works were displayed for the first time.
