Berlin Court Rules Against Extremist Label for Jewish Voice Group
The Berlin Administrative Court has ruled that the German domestic intelligence agency (Verfassungsschutz) can no longer classify the group "Jüdische Stimme für einen gerechten Frieden in Nahost e. V." as "proven extremist" for the time being. The group, which openly questions Israel's right to exist, posted on Instagram on October 10, 2023, referring to the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023, as a "prison break after inmates were sentenced to life imprisonment simply for being Palestinians." The court found that lacking empathy for Israeli terror victims does not constitute a call to violence, and that expressions of opinion are not preparation for violence. The decision raises questions about the group's influence on public debate and the limits of free speech. Christian Rath of the taz commented on the ruling in the current issue of Der Freitag.
