Berlin Bunker from Hitler's Chancellery Faces Demolition for Housing

The last remaining pre-war bunker from the Nazi government district in Berlin-Mitte, located at the site of Hitler's former New Reich Chancellery, is slated for demolition to make way for a seven-story residential building featuring 66 apartments and a six-story office complex. Dietmar Arnold, head of the Berliner Unterwelten association, contests this plan, emphasizing the bunker’s historical value. Although the State Monuments Office acknowledges its significance, it has not classified it as a protected monument. In March 2025, the State Monument Council suggested reassessing its preservation status. Building Senator Christian Gaebler (SPD) is against preservation, concerned it might attract pilgrims. Arnold advocates for its incorporation into the new development or as a space for exhibitions. This bunker is distinct from the Führerbunker, which is now a parking lot.
