Berlin Biennale 2016: DIS Magazine Curates Multidimensional Edition

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The ninth edition of the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, curated by the New York-based team from DIS Magazine—Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso, and David Toro—explores themes of business, consumer culture, trends, wellness, happiness, tourism, marketing, branding, and product design in a multidimensional society. The main venue is the Akademie der Künste, with additional spaces including the ground floor of the Feuerle Collection, the European School of Management and Technology, and a tourist boat from Reederei Riedel transformed into a venue for events and performances. At the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the landscape architecture collective atelier le balto created a green intervention titled 'passage' in the courtyard, while the Italian-London collective åyr presented an installation merging the Berlin Wall with Airbnb-style living spaces. Austrian philosopher Armen Avanessian, editor of Merve Verlag, whose concept of 'post-contemporary' underpins the biennale's theoretical framework, introduced 'Discreet,' a research platform or semi-public para-agency developed with Alexander Martos, running from June 22 to July 11, aiming to establish a secret service for citizens.
