Bergamo and Brescia's Landscape Festival Promotes Urban Ecology with Modular Green Pyramid and Peripheral Projects

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

The 13th I Maestri del Paesaggio/Landscape Festival took place in Bergamo and Brescia, Italy, under the theme 'Grow Together,' highlighting collaboration and community involvement as the cities celebrated their shared status as Italian Capitals of Culture. In Bergamo, Martin Rein-Cano, a landscape architect from the Berlin studio Topotek, created a modular green pyramid in Piazza Vecchia, constructed from metal tubes that housed 10,000 seedlings of local Lombard species, including linden, ash, oak, and pine. Visitors could ascend the structure and adopt plants for reforestation efforts in neglected public areas, with the adoption process extending beyond the festival. The event also showcased 'Parentesi Vaia,' a photographic exhibition by Manuel Cicchetti and Angelo Miotto. Meanwhile, in Brescia, Silvia Ghirelli implemented 'urban acupuncture' projects in underutilized spaces, utilizing recycled materials and local craftsmanship to establish small urban forests, promoting sustainability and ecological awareness amid climate challenges.
