Benjamin Weil’s Landmark Exhibition at Laboral Features Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection
Benjamin Weil, the new director of Laboral, a contemporary art center in Gijón, Spain, has organized the exhibition "Passages, voyages dans l'hyperspace" (October 6, 2010 – February 21, 2011). The show features major works from the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, secured by Weil from Francesca von Habsburg. The exhibition includes pieces by Cerith Wyn Evans, Olafur Eliasson (Your Uncertain Shadow (colour), 2010), Ai Weiwei (Traveling Light, 2007), Ernesto Neto (Esqueleto Globulos, 2001), Los Carpinteros (Frio estudio del desastre, 2005), Pipilotti Rist (Related Legs, 2001), Doug Aitken (No History, 2005), Maurizio Cattelan (Super-Noi, 1996), Carsten Nicolai (Telefunken, 2000-2010), and Sergio Prego (Tetsuo, Bound to Fail, 1998). Laboral occupies a vast Franco-era complex of 15,000 m², originally built as a school for state wards, now housing multiple venues. Weil, previously director of Aperto in Venice (1993), co-founder of äda'web (1994), new media director at ICA New York (1998-2000), and curator at SFMOMA, aims to make Laboral a key European platform.
