Benjamin Hall Design completes treehouse-like Adkins Treehouse in Phoenix

architecture-design · 2026-04-29

Arizona-based Benjamin Hall Design completed the Adkins Treehouse, a 952-square-foot addition to a 1959 ranch-style house in Phoenix. Completed in 2024, the two-storey extension replaces an unpermitted 1980s addition while maintaining the original footprint on a 0.3-acre lot. The design prioritizes immersion in the surrounding treetops, with hemlock siding that will naturally patina to grey. The addition features a split gable roof, a primary suite with linear windows wrapping corners, and a gridded millwork display case with frosted glass back that diffuses light. The project takes formal cues from Frank Lloyd Wright's nearby Raymond Carlson Residence. Interior materials include wood millwork, white walls, and blue tile. A metal grate railing cascades from the upper balcony to enclose a lower porch. A skylight over the bed and a concealed curtain track system enhance the experience. The studio also created a concrete masonry accessory dwelling unit nearby.
