Benjamin Franklin's Papers on Display at Library He Founded Before Sotheby's Auction
An exhibition featuring more than 150 pieces associated with Benjamin Franklin, such as early correspondence, scientific observations on electricity, and official documents, is currently showcased at the Library Company of Philadelphia prior to its auction at Sotheby's scheduled for June. Established by Franklin in 1731, this library was the first successful lending library in America. Owned by Jay Snider, the former president of the Philadelphia Flyers, the collection is valued between $3 million and $4.5 million. Noteworthy items include one of Franklin's earliest letters from 1738 regarding a book sale, family notes, and signed government documents. This marks the collection's inaugural public exhibition in Philadelphia, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.
