Benedetta Tagliabue's San Giacomo Apostolo Church Opens in Ferrara

After nearly a decade since winning the competition, Benedetta Tagliabue's San Giacomo Apostolo Church in Ferrara was inaugurated on October 16, 2021. The project, promoted by the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) as part of the sixth edition of the Progetti Pilota initiative, also includes Santa Maria Goretti Church in Mormanno by MC A – Mario Cucinella Architects and a parish church in Olbia by Francesca Leto, Michele Battistella, and Daniele Bertoldo. Tagliabue's design contrasts with Ferrara's historical architecture, featuring a sculptural, organic form with a vaulted wooden ceiling. The interior includes a monumental cross made from reclaimed beams from the Ferrara town hall renovation. The church was developed with liturgist Roberto Tagliaferri and artist Enzo Cucchi, who contributed artworks. A large piazza connects the church to the urban fabric. Tagliabue's next major project in Italy is a metro station in Naples' Centro Direzionale, designed by Kenzo Tange.
