Benci Art Opens in Florence, Merging Hospitality with Contemporary Art
Benci Art, a new contemporary art space, has opened within Benci House, a luxury guest house in Florence's historic center. The project, conceived by Sergio Risaliti, Rubina Romanelli, and Lorenzo Segre, aims to bridge hospitality and contemporary art. Unlike a traditional gallery, Benci Art extends beyond the hotel into public and private spaces across the city. The inaugural exhibition features artist Mario Cannavacciuolo (born 1954 in Naples), with works placed in locations including the Orthopedic Oncology department of Careggi, the Liceo Artistico di Porta Romana, a lawyer's studio, a psychoanalyst's office, an antique shop, a collector's home, and the curator's residence. Each site hosts a single artwork that dominates the space. Benci House, designed by Archea Associati, occupies a medieval apartment with views of Ponte alle Grazie and Villa Bardini. Its four rooms are themed around natural elements—walnut, oak, chestnut, and cypress—with vertical features evoking a forest. Reclaimed wood lines the living area and corridor, where art objects are displayed. Concurrently, a window of the adjacent Moyo nightclub hosts site-specific installations; Cannavacciuolo's ceramic piece, created with Gatti Ceramiche of Faenza, fills the window with a mosaic of tiles referencing Florentine history and traditions.
