Ben Bogart's AI reimagines Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey at Leicester's Phoenix

digital · 2026-04-20

On display at Phoenix in Leicester until 20 September as part of the Art-AI Festival 2021, Ben Bogart's Watching (2001: A Space Odyssey) (2018) offers an AI-driven reinterpretation of Stanley Kubrick's 1968 classic. This project reconstructs a complete feature-length film by analyzing sound fragments and frames, resulting in visuals characterized by fuzzy, quivering scenes adorned with animated white lines. Iconic symbols, such as an astronaut's helmet and HAL 9000's red dot, transform into colorful shapes, while the soundscape features high-pitched shrieks and indistinct murmurs. Following this, Bogart's Watching (Blade Runner) (2018) will be showcased from 22 September to 18 October, delving into cognition and the possibilities of AI, prompting inquiries into knowledge processes and narrative creation.
